Resources for the AQA FCSE
There are CILT information sheets which detail courses currently available for GCSE in French (rtf 413 KB), German (rtf 407 KB), Spanish (rtf 439 KB) and Italian (rtf 421 KB). The
GCSE foundation course materials are suitable for use with FCSE students as are course materials for students in KS3.
- Some of these courses are complete 11-16 courses and often contain GCSE assessment packs which are specific to particular awarding bodies.
- Some are stand-alone courses for KS4 only and some are ab-initio KS4 courses.
- Courses are always supplemented by listening materials and teachers' materials.
- Some courses have other support materials available including flashcards, OHT files, online resources, CD Rom resources and resources for interactive whiteboard use.
There are also revision resources available for GCSE, which can be used in class or independently, that are also suitable for FCSE. It is important that the correct type of resources are selected bearing in mind the topic being studied and that the materials are aimed at Foundation level GCSE. Students should be given advice on the selection of revision materials. The BBC bitesize revision website can be very helpful by providing revision materials at Foundation and Higher level in all four skills in French, German and Spanish. Students for the FCSE should be directed towards materials at foundation level in reading and listening. Visit the BBC bitesize revision website.
Schools often put revision materials onto a virtual learning environment so that their own pupils can access resources specific to the course being followed in the school. Other schools allow materials to be accessed by placing them on the school website.
Some examples:
www.languagesonline.org.uk/
www.ashcombe.surrey.sch.uk/Curriculum/modlang/index.htm
www.miltoncross.portsmouth.sch.uk/languages/languages_offered.htm
Although not specifically aimed at FCSE, these are all useful resources.
It is recommended that publishers’ websites are be consulted on a regular basis so that teachers can see what new materials are available. Nelson Thornes will be producing a dedicated course for the FCSE.

Sharing resources and ideas with others
Many teachers enjoy sharing resources they have made in free resource-sharing forums. In these forums it is usually possible to search by language and key stage or to find resources for particular topics. As the FCSE increases in popularity, it is likely that teachers will share their resources for this course on these forums.
