Advanced Subsidiary (AS)/Advanced level 2 (A2) and International Baccalaureate (IB)

Resources

There are CILT information sheets which detail resources currently available for Advanced courses in French, Spanish, German and Italian.

  • Some of these courses are written for particular specifications offered by different awarding bodies.
  • Courses are always supplemented by listening materials and teacher’s materials
  • Some courses have other support materials available including bridging grammar materials, supplementary grammar workbooks and on-line resources.
  • There are also DVDs aimed specifically at advanced level learners.  These often have accompanying worksheets and guides for teachers.
  • Resources for independent learning are very important at this level. These include newspapers with accompanying listening, self access grammar materials and websites (both free and subscription) aimed at Advanced level learners.

There are also revision resources available for AS and A2 which can be used in class or independently. It is important that the correct type of resources are selected according to the awarding body. Students should be given advice on the selection of revision materials.

Useful websites

There are also some useful websites for Advanced language courses
Here are some examples

Schools often put revision materials onto a virtual learning environment so that their own pupils can access resources specific to the course being followed in the school. Other schools allow materials to be accessed by all by placing them on the school website.

Authentic websites such as the foreign news and TV channel websites can be excellent sources of real reading and listening activities. There are also some which have been specially simplified for language students and which contain exercises based on the materials on the site which have been archived.

It is recommended that publishers’ websites should be consulted on a regular basis so that teachers can see what new materials are available.

Teachers often make use of ICT in language lessons. For useful ideas visit CILT's Languages ICT website.

Sharing resources and ideas with others

Many teachers also enjoy sharing resources they have made with others in free resource-sharing forums. In these forums it is usually possible to search by language and key stage or to find resources for particular topics.
