National success for Teesdale student

Jay Smith receiving his award from Zac GoldsmithJay Smith, currently in his final year at Teesdale 6th form, set the languages world alight last week when he won a national competition with an essay linked to his A level Spanish course.

Jay was invited to London by the Canning House group, an organisation which promotes links with South America, to a function where his first prize was announced. Jay received his award from Zac Goldsmith, the millionaire environmental campaigner. His essay, on the theme of environmental issues in South America was highly praised by the judges.

Jay has won a return ticket to South America, which he intends to use next year on his year out, and £250 cash. After rubbing shoulders and chatting with various South American ambassadors who attended the prestigious event, Jay has high hopes of being offered a job as part of his gap year in South America.

Headteacher of Teesdale School, Paul Harrison is delighted but not surprised by Jay's national success. 'In the international jobs market, where language skills are highly prized, Jay will without doubt be a roaring success. He is a very talented linguist and deserves the recognition he has received.'
