The teacher begins by showing the class a video of himself in a speed dating situation as a model of what they will have to do. This offers an amusing introduction to the topic which the students clearly enjoy. He then explains how the activity will work. He uses English at this point to explain the process. Next we see the students engaged in this activity. It can sometimes be more difficult to motivate KS4 language learners to take part in pairwork and this is an effective means of ensuring maximum participation because of the fun element.
The teacher then moves on to an extension activity where the students are given cards which contain different reasons why they would want to date someone. They use these cards to produce some more complex language justifying their opinions, a key skill for those aiming at C grade and above. Because the students have some suggestions on the cards, this gives them the confidence to speak out and the most able will try to produce even more extended responses.
