About us

Welcome to CILT, the National Centre for Languages

CILT, the National Centre for Languages is the Government’s recognised centre of expertise on languages. Our mission is to promote a greater capability in languages amongst all sectors of the UK population. CILT is also the standards-setting body for languages, interpreting and translation and the recognised expert body for language and cultural skills for the UK-wide Skills for Business Network.

We are based in London but operate throughout the UK, in partnership with our sister organisations CILT Cymru, Northern Ireland CILT and Scottish CILT.

Our finance comes from central government grants, income generated by programme activities, and funds received from public funding sources for specific projects. Our main funder is the Department for Children, Schools and Families. CILT, the National Centre for Languages is a company limited by guarantee no. 5375352 registered in England and Wales and is a registered charity no. 1108543 registered in England and Wales.

Mission statement: promoting a greater capability in languages

CILT aims to promote a greater capability in languages* in the UK. We seek to support and develop multilingualism and intercultural competence among all sectors of the population. We want to see more people learning languages, achieving higher levels of competence and using the skills and understanding they gain to benefit our wider society. We want to ensure our language teaching professionals are equipped to stimulate the enthusiasm of learners and to maximise their achievements. We want to play our part in ensuring that our country has access to the language professionals in interpreting and translating that we need as well as the next generation of teachers.

*By 'languages' we understand all languages other than English and including the intercultural competence associated with them. Other organisations cater for and have more specialist expertise in English, whether as a mother tongue, second language or foreign language. Similarly we are not specifically concerned with Welsh in Wales, Gaelic in Scotland, or BSL except inasmuch as these languages contribute to overall plurilingual competence, which we will promote strongly.
