Policy and fundingResponsibility for the direction and policy context for adult education now rests with the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). At www.dius.gov.uk you will find information about the key priorities for publicly subsidised adult learning. On this site you can view the Grant letter from the Department to the Learning and Skills Council setting out direction of travel for the coming year. DIUS is in the process of delivering its response to the Leitch Review of Skills. More information about the Review can be accessed from the Department of Children, Schools and Families website www.dcsf.gov.uk The Learning and Skills Council is the principal funding body for post 19 teaching and learning. At www.lsc.gov.uk you will find a range of documents that set out precisely what kind of learning will be commissioned by the Council and how that commissioning will take place. Links to your regional Learning and Skills Councils will clarify what the regional priorities for learning will be. The National Institute of Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE) is conducting an Independent Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Lifelong Learning and calling for evidence into the current state of adult learning from organisations and individuals. Visit www.niace.org.uk for further information. NIACE is also the source of annual participation figures for adults in learning. Qualifications and QualityNew initial teacher training requirements for teachers in FE and adult education came into force from September 2007. There are new qualifications and a commitment required from teachers to participate in ongoing, formal continuing professional development. For further information, go to the website of Lifelong Learning UK (the sector skills agency for lifelong learning) at www.lluk.org.uk. A regional network of Centres of Excellence in Teacher Training (CETT) has been created to develop courses and deliver the new qualifications. Ofsted is responsible for the inspection of adult learning. Go to www.ofsted.gov.uk for key documents and to read inspection reports. The National Teaching and Learning Change Programme (NTLCP) managed by the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA) embraces a number of actions designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in further and adult education. As well as initial teaching qualifications the programme is the home of resources for teaching and learning developed for languages by the DCSF Standards Unit and NIACE. These resources are available online www.qia.org.uk as well as being distributed in boxed sets to providers throughout England. The subject learning coach initiative that is linked to the dissemination of these resources is managed for QIA by the Learning and Skills Network (www.lsneducation.org.uk) and information about this can be found at www.subjectlearningcoach.net. |
