Learning through listening (APF6)

Helen Wright

The ability to listen well is essential to achieving a good grade at A level in MFL. All too often, however, teachers are uncertain about how they can develop this fundamental skill. This book provides practical support and guidance to enable teachers to approach the teaching of listening confidently.

When the listening element of oral examinations is taken into account, up to 50% of an A level can depend on accurate listening. An even higher percentage of the preparation that students do for their exams – to cover the topics and to learn the language – can rely on developing a good ability to listen. Learning through listening will enable both teachers and students to understand more comprehensively the skill and art of listening and help them to plan and develop more effective strategies, supported by:

  • case studies which illustrate a range of effective classroom practice, presenting ideas that will improve listening;
  • photocopiable checklists which provide overviews of key information;
  • an associated Web page providing direct links to the websites mentioned.
