Comenius North West is a collaboration between the University of Cumbria and The Manchester College. At Cumbria, INSET is provided on a regional, national and international basis, drawing on the skills and expertise not only of the university's Modern Foreign Languages Department team, but also key speakers and trainers brought in as required. The staff have expertise in the following: all aspects of target language use in the classroom, including teaching grammar through the target language; motivating learners in KS4; the use of video and listening resources; the promotion of writing skills; teaching languages in special schools; target-language testing; mentor training; the new exam syllabuses and their implementation; voice training; TEFL training; ab initio language teaching post-18; the exploration of learning styles; and differentiation.
In addition to the INSET work, materials are also developed and produced for the TEFL, AE and school sectors. Full details of materials, together with the programme of INSET and CPD for the current year, are available on request.
MANCAT is situated in the centre of Manchester and houses a large collection of resource materials for Modern Foreign Languages, from primary to FE level. The resources include new publications, textbooks, audiocassettes, videos, Internet resources, CD-ROMs, resource magazines, authentic background materials for most foreign languages, and can be used by visitors free of charge. In organising its training events and INSET, the centre co-operates with the Italian Consulate, the Spanish Embassy, as well as other national partners. Teachers and PGCE students are welcome to visit the centre at their convenience, or to make an appointment for a 'guided tour'.
