The Routes into Languages Programme is an Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) funded initiative to increase and widen participation in language study in HE. It also aims to support the national role of HE languages as a motor of economic and civic regeneration. The Programme has been developed by the University Council of Modern Languages (UCML), the HE Academy Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS) and CILT, the National Centre for Languages.
Under the programme, Regional Consortia of every region in England have been established to work in partnership with other stakeholders such as Comenius, local colleges and schools, and Aim Higher, in order to widen participation in language learning from Key Stage 4 onwards.
There are also two National Networks, one for Translation and one for Interpreting. These networks will promote professional careers and work with the regional consortia where appropriate to promote career paths to students studying several languages, or to students interested in expanding into this field after university.
Three research projects have been commissioned in order to map provision and make recommendations on developing the capacity of language programmes on: community languages in higher education; languages and international events and; languages and enterprise. The research projects are downloadable in PDF format here . Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)
