CLIL Maths units through French - Woodbridge High School
Context
Woodbridge High is a mixed comprehensive 11-18 community school. It is also a specialist Language and Business & Enterprise college. At Key Stage 4 all students pursue studies in modern languages and 21% of students in the school qualify as EAL learners.
How the programme is organised
A CLIL scheme of 'Bilingual Maths' at Woodbridge High is now in its fourth year. All students in Year 7 and 8 are involved in this CLIL scheme, which covers mathematics through the medium of French. This happens during selected lessons after the basics in Maths’ units have been primarily covered in English. It is towards the end of specific modules that teachers from the Maths and MFL departments collaborate in co-teaching lessons delivered in French. Hence, the lessons are mostly designed to consolidate and extend the subject knowledge of students. Originally, the strong motive for implementing this CLIL initiative across the school was to provide a more authentic context for students to practise and explore French. Additionally, it was seen as an opportunity for teachers to share ideas and good practice.
Results/effects
To date, students have shown higher levels of motivation within this learning context. In the long term, it is also projected that the scheme will help foster in students more positive attitudes towards language learning.
Future developments
The initiative is ongoing. The current priority is to consolidate the practice and possibly increase the students’ exposure to the foreign language through CLIL.
