The ASDAN International Award
The ASDAN International Award is a flexible award in which pupils present a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates a range of skills acquired through international activities and studies.
There are four modules to the award:
Module 1 International awareness
Module 2 Visits and exchanges
Module 3 Cultural activity
Module 4 Global issues
The award is designed to increase students' understanding of the global environment in which we live and work. Students must undertake 12 challenges, totalling 60 hours, to complete a successful portfolio. The aim is to bolster the students' enthusiasm for languages by giving them the opportunity to bring their own interests into the classroom and to channel them into producing interesting and creative pieces of work that include language elements where appropriate.
Each challenge has a certain number of guided learning hours, 3 hours for the shorter challenges and up to 10 hours for the longer ones. Students must show that they are competent in several skills to fulfill the criteria of a complete portfolio and must spend 60 hours on it overall. There is an indepth ‘PLAN – DO – REVIEW’ exercise that students undertake for three of the challenges which examines the processes that they are going through rather than the product. Successful completion of these is essential.

Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE)
In many ways this is a continuation of the International Award as CoPE allows students to go much deeper into the challenges they must complete. The standards are higher, and students must show a sound understanding of the processes they are using when undertaking their work. Students review their peers’ contribution to projects and hold an increased level of responsibility for their work. Six challenges at 10 hours each are required to combine CoPE with the International Award to achieve a level 2 qualification.
