Person
in charge of project: Monica Elswood
Daniel Stewart's
& Melville College is an 800-pupil private school for boys. The name of
the project refers to French and German newspapers produced by its middle
school pupils. The pupils work in clubs to produce an A3 broadsheet four
times a year. This provides an opportunity to display pupils' written
work as well as reading material based on events and people in the school.
The newspaper is distributed free of charge to all pupils in the middle
school and has a unit cost of less than 2 pence per copy.
Objectives
of the project
- To encourage pupils
to produce good written work in a fun environment
- To stimulate pupils'
reading
- To produce a forum
for pupils with linguistic and/or artistic flair
Ways
in which the project is innovative
- The club welcomes
both high fliers and slower learners
- The end project
is attractive, but with low production costs
Ways
in which the project is effective
- The members of
the club have the satisfaction and pleasure of seeing their names in
print
- The project produces
a 'snowball effect' whereby readers are stimulated to submit items themselves
Ways
in which the project can be developed or replicated
- The first year
of the project has proved successful and so it is planned to continue
with it
