Congratulations to the following 15 projects which won Awards in 2003:

Secondary schools

  • Bridgewater County High School, Warrington
    Drama and creativity project with languages in which sixth formers run language workshops with primary schoolchildren.
  • Frederick Gough School, Lincolnshire
    A work-related Spanish programme which motivates pupils in Key Stage 4.
  • Hayle Community School, Cornwall
    Example of a Specialist Language College involving the local community, in this case staff of a local zoo, in language activities for Year 7 pupils.
  • Parkstone Grammar School, Poole
    Italian as an enrichment to the curriculum (and 4th foreign language) in Key Stages 4 and 5.
  • Woodbridge High School, Woodford Green
    'Teach a friend a language' project in which pupils with home languages other than English pair up with friends and teach them a short conversation.

Primary schools

  • Robert Gordon's Junior School, Aberdeen
    This independent school has produced a CD of French raps for young learners, written by the teacher and class together and now widely distributed to other schools.

Special schools

  • Maplewood School, Sunderland (EBD, primary and secondary) Inspirational example of successful language teaching for disadvantaged youngsters.
  • Perry Common Special Schools, Birmingham
    Imaginative ways of making French accessible to deaf, blind and physically disabled pupils.
  • Portal House School, Dover (EBD, primary)
    Enlightened programme for primary age boys with emotional and behavioural difficulties, involving links with France, Belgium and Germany.

Universities

 

  • University of Glasgow
    Special module in languages for medical students, enabling them to undertake placements in foreign hospitals.
  • University of Hull Language Institute
    Imaginative way of teaching Italian to a diverse range of learners via a simulation. Learners act as the editorial board of an Italian newspaper and news programme.

Other Organisations

 

  • Partners in Excellence, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire, Argyll and Bute
    A virtual centre of excellence for modern languages, providing distance learning and support for post 16 languages in 29 schools.
  • Centre for Intercultural Resources and Language Education (CIRCLE), Gloucester
    Pupils are involved in developing multimedia resources about their own languages and cultures.
  • Liniclate Education Centre, Benbecula
    National Gaelic debate for 15-17 year olds, broadcast live on TV.
  • Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council
    Vast range of imaginative activities to stimulate language learning, including an annual festival, concerts, workshops, language days, and a German fair involving teacher trainees from German.
