European Award for Languages - 2004 Winner
British Sign Language for primary school children
Giving pupils an introduction to British Sign Language, this initiative was started in response to interest from other pupils when a deaf child joined the school. Based around lunchtime and after school clubs, the project involves interested pupils as well as their parents, whose involvement is encouraged. Pupils have an increased awareness of sign language, and a number of students will formalise their achievement by taking the CACDP Level 1 exam this year.
All Saints’ Blackheath is a small inner London primary school,
which until two years ago had no experience of British Sign Language.
