Further Information
The European Award for Languages is a Europe-wide initiative, supported by the European Commission to promote best practice in innovative and effective Modern Language learning.
Also known as the European Label, the Award recognises projects demonstrating an innovative, effective and replicable approach to learning languages, with applications welcome from schools, colleges, businesses and other institutions.
Eligible UK projects can be based around any language other than English and are expected to have a European dimension.
CILT, the National Centre for Languages co-ordinates the initiative in the UK and works with an advisory group made up of representatives from partner organisations to judge the entries. Once satisfied that the project meets the main criteria of being innovative, effective and replicable, the judges look at the support for the project and the impact that it has had. This is measured not only in terms of general impact within the organisation but also with regards the competence and motivation of participants.
Award-winning projects provide a potential source of inspiration for others, in different languages, contexts and even different countries, underlining the importance of the criteria that the project be replicable. To date, over 100 UK projects have proved that such criteria can be met and that creative thinking can lead to improved teaching provision and learner achievement.
In addition
to the European Label, which can be used on corporate stationery, winners
receive prizes of books, teaching resources and vouchers from a range
sponsors, including embassies, publishers, public bodies and private
companies.
Certificates signed by the European Commissioner for Education and Culture
and a UK Minister are presented at a special awards ceremony in the
autumn each year. Special awards are available for specific languages
and sectors,
with one winning project also receiving the Mary Glasgow Award of £2,000.
