Rothervision 2007, Cent@Magna

The only thing missing from this project is Terry Wogan himself! Eight primary schools across Rotherham have been involved in an exciting Eurovision Song Contest style event imaginatively combining language, popular culture music and dance. Importantly the project has been very successful in implementing languages at key stage 2, in line with national languages strategy.

All the participating schools were given video conferencing equipment in advance of the event. They then planned, rehearsed and created a film about the school environment, using the target language. These films are sent off, judged and prizes were awarded.

On the night groups of children from participating schools met together to perform their songs at the “Rothervison” event. This was then video conferenced eight ways enabling all schools to watch and award points that were reported back in the target language. The event raised the profile of language learning through song and rhyme as well as creating links between schools and promoting the possibilities offered by video conferencing.

Schools invited to take part in Rothervision pilot event: Rotherham Children and Young People’s Services, Anston Hillcrest Primary School, Aughton Primary School, Bramley Grange Primary School, Herringthorpe Junior School, Kiveton Park Meadows Junior School, Thorpe Hesley Junior, Swinton Fitzwilliam Primary and Maltby Crags Junior School. This project was Comenius funded.

Language(s): French and Spanish – any language being taught in school.
