Comenius Yorkshire and the Humber is a partnership between Leeds Trinity and All Saints College in Leeds, York St John University College in York, the East Riding of Yorkshire LEA and Sheffield LEA School Effectiveness Service. The resource centre at Leeds Trinity and All Saints College contains a large selection of stock donated by educational publishers, cultural institutes, BBC Education, Channel 4 and others. There are video playback facilities and cassette recorders with headphones. Everything is for reference and is much appreciated by visiting teachers, PGCE and GTP students and Modern Languages undergraduates. The training centre runs a number of courses throughout the year for Modern Languages teachers. Recent developments have included in-house training in various schools, a greater Modern Languages consultancy role. action-research projects with individual teachers and pupil masterclasses. For all involved in teaching Modern Languages to primary pupils, the Early Language Learning Regional Support Group for the West Yorkshire region holds regular INSET and information sessions here. The resource base at Wolfreton Upper School, Kirk Ella, is just to the west of Hull. It has a 24-hour answering service for queries, and a manager. The Centre offers a warm welcome to teachers and learners of languages looking to pursue a personal interest, research new teaching and learning materials, or work on developments prioritised in school or departmental action plans. There are local and regional programmes of in-service training and other events. For details see Events and Courses section of this website. The Kirk Ella site offers an excellent venue for meetings of staff or students from different schools or for departmental meetings or INSET days. You can book the main room (seating up to 10) or the new digital training room (seating up to 30) with interactive whiteboard. Tea and coffee facilities, lunches or teas are available on request. Heather Hodgson, Manager of the Comenius Centre, can help you plan events. There is also access to advisory support, as well as all the resources of the centre, including a wide range of books on language teaching methodology for sale or for loan, as well as information from CILT and all leading national agencies connected with the teaching of Modern Languages. The York resource centre aims to become a hub for communications across this widely dispersed region; videoconferencing and e-mail facilities are available for teachers and students, and the catalogue of resources can now be accessed on-line. The regularly updated website carries a comprehensive range of information for MFL departments, as well as the full programme of events for the coming year. The centre is also equipped with a range of hardware for the creation of digital teaching materials, which can be made available for teachers to use. |
