Community languages

CILT, the National Centre for Languages works to promote the importance of all languages spoken within the UK alongside the more common, often western European languages, taught in our education system and taken advantage of by employers. CILT recognises the contribution and potential of these ‘community’ languages, both to society as a whole and to individual speakers and learners.

As well as dedicated cross-phase activities such as the Bulletin and National Show to support the education field, CILT has developed community languages and intercultural skills strands of work across a wide range of our activities, including promoting languages, engaging with employers, acting as a sector body and supporting teachers in specific education sectors.

Our languages project

Our Languages logo CILT has worked with key partners to develop the Our languages website and resources to highlight the benefits of mainstream and complementary schools working together.
