About the course

This course is aimed at teachers who wish to develop their skills, ideas and experiences for MFL teaching and learning across a range of basic ICT applications. Course content is designed specifically to help teachers raise the standards of MFL achievement of their pupils through the use of ICT.

The course is delivered as a combination of face-to-face training during two contact days
(one at the beginning and one at the end of the course) and distance learning with tutor
support. The distance-learning phase of approximately eight weeks is also supported by access to ICT in MFL reading materials on a password-protected website. A series of tasks and opportunities for discussion culminate in a classroom-based project, which participating teachers report back on during the second contact day. Teachers will require approximately two to three hours per week to take full advantage of the distance learning element of the course.

Teachers will require approximately two to three hours per week to take full advantage of the distance-learning element of the course.

The course is aimed at language teachers in secondary education who:
  • wish to develop core ICT skills through a focus on languages;
  • aim to extend the use of ICT in their classroom, particularly by pupils;
  • have not had access to NOF ICT training.
The course will focus on:
  • the use of ICT to raise standards of pupil achievement in languages;
  • effective integration and management of ICT within language lessons;
  • development of high-quality teaching materials.
Sessions across the two days include:
  • Linguistic development through word-processing and text manipulation.
  • Whole-class teaching with PowerPoint presentation software.
  • Setting up an effective and manageable e-mail project.
  • Integrating the use of authentic websites into lesson activities.
  • Exploiting data-processing to develop all four skills.
  • Evaluating electronic resources for languages.
  • Creating and exploiting sound files within teaching resources.
  • Potential for future developments in ICT and lanuages.

Teachers must also expect to procure at least occasional access to ICT during lesson time, both for teaching the whole class and facilitating pupil independent use. Teachers must also have a reliable e-mail address. As the focus of this course is on the application of ICT to subject teaching, teachers should have basic familiarity with using a computer before applying for the course.

Pre-requisite skills include:
  • using the mouse;
  • creating and saving documents;
  • manipulating word-processed text;
  • managing files and folders;
  • creating and sending e-mails.

N.B. This course is not suitable for teachers who completed their NOF training with CILT or for teachers who completed successful MFL training with another NOF provider.
