About the course

Teaching Spanish in a secondary school and looking to improve your language skills?

Want to refresh your knowledge of Spanish society and culture?

Spanish for the secondary school offers you a lively mix of language classes, discussions and an extensive cultural and recreational programme which will ensure you will be totally immersed in the Spanish lifestyle. As your linguistic fluency and confidence increase, you will be encouraged to exchange ideas and develop materials which will truly transform your teaching.

You will be based in Pamplona, whose festivals and fine architecture have provided inspiration for many writers including Ernest Hemingway. Cultural excursions will give you ample opportunities to enjoy the culture and cuisine of traditional Spanish life

Course Tutors

Experienced native speakers and tutors from the Universidad Pública de Navarra and an independant CILT consultant from the UK.

Who is it for?

This two-week course is designed for teachers of Spanish in secondary schools or their equivalent (pupils aged 11–18). The course includes language and methodology classes, visits to Spanish secondary schools and a programme of excursions. Participants will improve and update their language skills, develop their cultural awareness, and develop materials to take back to use in class.

The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish and therefore applicants should have a good working knowledge of the language to get by on a day-to-day basis.

The course will include:

  • Language enhancement classes;
  • Opportunities to consider approaches, methods and materials relevant to teaching Spanish in Secondary Education;
  • Full programme of visits, excursions and social activities;
  • Visits to Spanish secondary schools.

Aims

  • To improve and update your Spanish language skills;
  • To improve your ability to teach Spanish;
  • To develop cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary Spain;
  • To develop professional links with Spanish teachers;
  • To provide participants with suitable materials to enhance the teaching of Spanish.

Pre-requisite skills

All applicants must be either teaching Spanish, or be planning to introduce it. The course will be given completely in Spanish and therefore applicants must have an intermediate knowledge of the target language. This course is not suitable for beginners although it can cater for a range of linguistic levels. The course is particularly suitable for teachers who have Spanish as a second foreign language, or those who are in need of refreshment or retraining. Participants will be grouped according to their level in Spanish.

The fee for the course is €1,800. You can apply for a grant through the Comenius Professional Development programme (managed by the British Council) or Grundtvig programme (managed by ECOTEC) to contribute to the course fee, subsistence and your travel.
