German for the primary school offers you a lively mix of language classes, discussions and an extensive cultural and recreational programme which will ensure you will be totally immersed in the German lifestyle. As your linguistic fluency and confidence increase, you will be encouraged to exchange ideas and develop materials which will truly transform your teaching.

You will be based in Schwäbisch Hall, one of the most picturesque towns in southern Germany. The Goethe-Institut is well placed in the heart of the atmospheric Old Town, giving you plenty of opportunities to sample the lively cultural and artistic scene on offer.

Nigel Pearson and Helen Groothues, Language Teaching Advisers at CILT, the National Centre for Languages and native speakers from the Goethe-Institut.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for teachers of German in primary schools. The course will present creative ideas to help teachers to integrate German into best primary practice. The focus will be primarily on practical methodology and language improvement.

The course will include:

  • Creative ideas to help integrate German into best primary practice, including the use of ICT;
  • Practical methodology to encourage children to communicate;
  • Daily language sessions with a native speaker;
  • Exploration of a variety of resources for teachers to use in the classroom;
  • Active learning, including songs, poems, finger and action rhymes, games and stories;
  • Using German to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing;
  • A programme of cultural visits to familiarize participants with this region of Germany;
  • Opportunities to use ICT to create materials and present language and culture to young learners.

Aims

  • To build up your confidence and competence in German;
  • To improve methodological expertise in the teaching of German to young learners;
  • To collect and develop suitable authentic materials for teaching German at primary level;
  • To update and improve knowledge of Germany and German culture;
  • To consider how ICT can be used to create effective teaching materials.

Pre-requisite skills

The methodology sessions, delivered largely through the medium of English and using key German words and structures, will focus on techniques which will involve all pupils in learning through German. Participants will be encouraged to speak German as much as possible in social situations and on the cultural excursions. Therefore only teachers with a basic knowledge of German are encouraged to apply for this course.

The fee for the course is €1,600. You can apply for a grant through the Comenius Professional Development programme (managed by the British Council) to contribute to the course fee, subsistence and your travel.

The course fee covers:

  • course and tuition fees;
  • half-board accommodation;
  • a daily subsistence allowance to go towards evening meals;
  • a CILT tutor to accompany you throughout the course;
  • some excursions.

You or your institution will also need to pay for:

  • travel;
  • extra optional excursions;
  • your own social activities;
  • your own day-to-day expenses.

Regarding the grant, priority is given to applicants who have not received a professional development grant in the last two years. The deadline for grant applications for this course is 31 January 2008, please ensure that you send your registration form to us as soon as possible to avoid missing the deadline date for funding. The British Council will not consider grant applications after this date.

Please note the first and last days of the course are travelling days.

  • You send your completed grant application form to the British Council Education and Training Group (the national agency responsible for issuing these grants) as soon as possible.
  • You will be informed by the British Council ETG whether you have been awarded a Comenius Professional Development grant.
  • You tell us if you have been awarded the grant by sending us a copy of the confirmation letter from the British Council ETG
  • CILT will confirm your attendance on the course if a place is still available.
