About the course

'Flying high!' is the annual national conference to disseminate the developing innovative good practice to be found in Specialist Language Colleges (SLCs) which can be replicated in all schools. Sessions will be in the form of case studies from practising teachers and senior managers to SLCs.

The conference is for all teachers of languages and senior management team members seeking to raise achievement and interested in the development of language teaching and learning. It is also aimed at local authority advisers and inspectors, and teacher trainers.

The event will look at:

  • The impact of the National Strategy for Languages in Key Stage 4: Recent developments in provision, policy and practice.
  • Key Stage 3 strategic learning networks.
  • How language teaching and learning can support the Every Child Matters agenda.
  • The benefits to be gained when SLCs work closely in partnership with local authorities, PGCE providers and other key partners.
  • Family learning.
  • The impact of Asset Languages in the classroom.
  • How languages as a second specialism can bring new impetus to whole-school initiatives.
  • CILT's project to support Specialist Language Colleges and their 'families' of schools in the area of early language learning. This will include looking at the KS2 Framework for MFL and how teachers in SLCs and primary partners are working as regional trainers and coaches.
  • Sport and languages: A focus on joint working and sharing pedagogy that will motivate students.
  • Increasing take-up of modern languages by pupils 14-19.
  • Alternatives to GCSE.
  • How to access and use CILT's Vocational Languages Resources Bank.
  • Promoting languages Post-16.
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
  • The Cambridge University Language Project.

  • Using new technologies including work from the CILT Digital Video Project.
  • Forging sustainable links abroad and how to access funding for international work.
