About the event
Flying High is the annual national conference for all those involved in language teaching and learning. The aim is to disseminate the innovative good practice from language colleges and beyond, which can be replicated in all schools. The event includes sessions from practising teachers and senior managers in language colleges.

This event is run in partnership by the CILT, the National Centre for Languages and the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT).

Key themes

The theme this year is building on students’ prior knowledge and understanding within and across key stages

This event will look at:
The impact of the National Strategy for Languages across all key stages, recent developments in provision, policy and practice.  Themes and sessions will include:

  • The New Secondary (Curriculum)
  • Developments in the Key Stage 3 Strategic Learning Networks and the KS3 Framework.
  • Cross-phase projects
  • Cross-curricular projects
  • Working with supplementary schools – the Our Languages project
  • Developing autonomous learners
  • Increasing take-up of modern languages by pupils 14–19.
  • Alternatives to GCSE.
  • KS2/3 transition
  • Key stage 3/4 transition
  • Community languages
  • Building on students’ prior knowledge and learning across key stages

Sessions will be in the form of case studies from practising teachers and senior managers in Specialist Language Colleges. Language Teaching Advisers from CILT, Advisers from the SSAT and Representatives of other agencies will be on hand to offer further support and advice.
