French for the Primary School - a report on
the course in 2002
23-28 July 2002
St Omer
A six-day CILT residential course in St Omer, Pas de Calais. This course, designed for teachers of French in primary schools, presented creative ideas to help teachers to integrate modern foreign languages into best primary practice. The focus was primarily on practical methodology and language improvement.

The venue was a nineteenth century French country house set in a rural
location 8km east of St Omer.
The methodology sessions focussed on practical methodology to encourage
children to communicate, and activities included songs, poems, finger
and action rhymes and games. Participants actively explored ways of using
modern foreign languages to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing
skills with young learners. Additionally, ways of making grammar readily
understandable to young learners were explored, with some very lively
kinaesthetic responses! A key feature of the course was the opportunity
to explore resources for teaching and learning, both commercial and those
which teachers already have in the classroom. (more
