Application procedure

Applications are invited from schools, colleges, universities, businesses and other institutions engaged in foreign language initiatives, which are innovative, effective and replicable.

Criteria

Judges will be looking for projects, based in traditional or innovative learning environments, which bring its participants added value in terms of competence and motivation.

Projects should be as comprehensive as possible, reaching beyond small groups of learners. Evidence of institution-wide support for the project and indeed its overall impact would also strengthen applications.

Projects can involve any language other than English, but should include an international dimension. Award-winning initiatives will serve as a potential source of inspiration for projects in other contexts, languages and even other countries.

For projects to be eligible for an Award they must demonstrate that they are:

Innovative
The initiative involves a new method, approach or resource, which improves on previous provision.

Effective
The project is underpinned by verifiable progress towards learner targets.*

Replicable
The initiative can be replicated in other contexts, with potential for growth and development.

* NB: New projects that have not been operational for long enough to produce the intended outcomes will not be eligible for an Award at this stage.

How to apply

Either apply on-line or download the application form and send by e-mail or by post. Applicants will be required to answer a number of questions about their project, including:
What are the aims of the project?
When was it started and how is it funded?
What is the main language involved in your project?
Does the project involve ICT?
What are the project activities?
What has the project achieved so far?
What else is planned to develop the project?
How could this project be replicated in other contexts?

Any supporting evidence for consideration by the judging panel (photos, resources etc) should be sent to the EAL team at the address below and can be returned at the end of the judging process.

Project visits will take place between early March and end of May 2009.

Winners will be notified by 22 May 2009. The winners prize giving ceremony will take place at the endof June 2009.

The deliberations of the panel of judges are confidential and CILT, the National Centre for Languages is unable to enter into any discussion about their conclusions.
