Cape/ St Gilda's performing arts project, Cape Cornwall School
For four years Cape Cornwall School has been running a French Exchange programme with a creative difference. Each year staff and pupils at their school collaborate with pupils from a school in Brittany to prepare a show based around a common theme. On the first exchange, back in 2004 they wrote and performed musical items together, since then shows have included drama, dance, photography and film.
From an early stage the groups communicate with each other, getting to know their exchange partners and collaborate on the project. By late March they are ready for the Cornish group of around 20 pupils to travel to France. After a couple days of rehearsal they perform two shows, once to a group of primary children and then to the general public.
In June the French group go to Cornwall for the return visit and another entertaining performance. The English group must perform in French when they are in Brittany and the French in English in Cornwall although there are always some parts of the show where the pupils all perform together.
Cape Cornwall school is a small comprehensive in the extreme southwest of Cornwall teaching students aged 11-16. The pupils suffer from living in an area of rural deprivation, both economic and social. The school has recently gained specialist status in art, music and photography, and strives to offer to pupil’s opportunities otherwise unavailable locally.
