Truck Speak, Canterbury Christ Church University

Just as its name suggests this innovative project works with truck drivers who are constantly finding themselves faced with European languages on their travels. It aims to improve their communication, language skills and competencies through work linked vocational training.

Research was undertaken to assess the real work needs of truck drivers so the language materials could be tailored to meet them. These materials include sets of language cards with accompanying audiotapes developed as a trucker’s communication tool. Fourteen different language combinations were developed in ten situations, based on ‘a day in the life of a trucker’. Alongside the cards audio cd’s were developed either for independent learning while en route or for formal group learning situations.

The course has been very successful with interest from many different bodies including the police and Eurotunnel and it is being used across seven partner countries.
