European Day of Languages Celebrations at Hele's School
Year 8 pupils at Hele’s School enjoyed a day of language activities as part of the school’s celebration of the European Day of Languages which falls on 26th September. They had lessons in Dutch, Russian and Italian, learnt about language roots to enable them to make links across many different European languages and enjoyed practical workshops such as making German Karneval masks and French crêpes. Pupils’ existing language skills were also fully exploited, with pupils writing haikus in French and German, and the event culminated in a “Celebration of Language” with each class putting on a show in the afternoon at the for their fellow pupils, staff, friends and relatives to enjoy. Performances included a French version of Blind Date, Red Riding Hood (in German) meeting Shrek and the Three Blind Mice, as well as a German fashion show and the Eurovision Song Contest in French!
James Mitchell 8F “ In the session on language roots we looked at so many different languages to see how they are connected – we did how some words are so similar in different languages” Livvy Clare and Anna Davey 8G “ We really enjoyed the afternoon performances. It was good to show what our class have been learning and also to see what everyone else had been working on. We were actually using our German to put on a play which was different to just being in the classroom” Luke Williams 8F “ I really liked being able to pick out words we knew in other groups’ performances. And in the Italian lesson we said words and put body language to them to make them easier to remember. It was fun saying words like pizza but in an Italian way!”
