Languages handmime

This is a great way of getting children to communicate in your chosen language and to have fun!

This is how it can be done:

Hand mime - thumbs up

1. children hold out their hands, thumbs extended, hands pointing to each other

Hand mime - talking

2. the thumbs then talk and nod as they exchange basic information!

Hand mime - goodbye

3. finally, when saying goodbye one thumb is hidden behind the other hand, moved to behind the fingers in the palm, and then it seems it has disappeared!

Hand mime - puppetsChildren can use funny voices when speaking
They can exchange basic or more complex information, depending on their knowledge of language
The thumbs can have names, and a whole identity!
Children can conduct the short conversations with themselves or a with a partner
Small finger puppets can be made to add more enjoyment
The conversations can then be shown to the class, recorded or performed in an assembly!

Sample basic conversation:

Bonjour!
Bonjour!

Comment ça va?
Ça va bien, merci.

Je m’appelle Fred. Comment tu t’appelles?
Je m’appelle Dot. Où habites tu?

J’habite à Manchester!

Bien!

Au revoir!
A bientôt!

Let your fingers do the talking!
