What's going on?

CILT will be organising, co-ordinating and taking part in a number of events to mark the European Day of Languages. See below for a selection.

  • European Day of Languages - 26 September 2008, St Pancras Station, London
The European Commission's office in the UK is arranging an exhibition offering information on language learning, different countries and cultures. St Pancras Station, a communications hub between the UK and the rest of Europe, will provide the backdrop to the celebrations.

Please do join us alongside many more language and cultural instituions all together in the one place for one day! Enter a quiz where you can win a language course and other prizes, pick up freebies and goodies and discover much more about language learning and teaching.

  • LAFTAs Award Ceremony
Organised by CILT, this invitation only event, to be held at the British Museum, will see the announcement of the winners of the Languages and Film Talent Awards (LAFTAS). The competition invited young people aged 13-21 to create a 2-minute clip to highlight the benefits of language skills. Clips and details of prizes and celebrity judges can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/routesintolanguages or become a fan on Facebook.

With people across Europe organising events to celebrate the European Day of Languages it can be both useful and inspiring to know what people are up to. The Council of Europe, which organises the Day, hosts an on-line events calendar where you can look up events in the UK and beyond.

Don't forget to enter details of your event to show support for the European Day of Languages, even if it's not open to the public. As events are entered into the European calendar some will be highlighted on the CILT site, so don't forget to register your event.

Here at CILT we use this calendar to field enquiries from local and regional media on the Day so do input details of what you're doing and you never know you might get some coverage in the press or even find yourself on the telly!
