What has happened in the past in local communities?

Here are a few examples of the many ways people across the UK celebrated the European Day of Languages in their local communities in 2005.

A European night was held for the youth group at St. Pius Church, with young people enjoying quizzes, making flags and a map of Europe competition.

Cornwall County Council held a one-day conference to look at language planning in other communities and relate it to Cornwall and the Cornish language, with guest speakers from across the UK.

Free language taster classes were on offer in Kingston upon Thames as the borough looked t to introduce regular lunchtime language classes and in Wolverhampton there was an exhibition of languages so anyone interested in learning a language could find the right course for them.

The Light House Media Centre invited the local community to watch the film "Italian for beginners" after having sampled some Italian and Polish food, French wine and flamenco.

At the Central Library, Halifax, celebrations centered around improving links with twin towns, whilst providing information on language learning opportunities in the borough. Access to on-line language learning and taster lessons were available. The day also included language activities including a tongue twister competition.
