What has happened in the past in schools?

Here are a few examples of the many ways schools across the UK celebrated the European Day of Languages in 2005.

Several schools chose to celebrate the European Day of Languages through the medium of food. From continental breakfasts to food tasting quizzes and even language-themed home economics classes, this is a great way to get the whole school involved.

One school looked to involve all their staff in their EDL celebrations by asking everyone to wear a badge stating which languages they speak/understand and to greet their classes in another language at the start of each lesson, thereby stressing the wide range of languages to be found within the school community.

In keeping with the 'A-Z of Languages and Careers' theme, class/year group teams took the A to Z challenge, submitting all the languages in which they can say hello, with a prize being awarded to the team covering the most letters of the alphabet.

Another planned competition designed to involve the whole school consists of putting up a number of quotes/adverts/proverbs etc from as many different European languages as possible around the school building. Pupils have to locate them all and decide which language they are written in.

At a school in Harrogate pupils took part in a football tournament playing as teams of countries who speak a European Language. Continuing the football theme, pupils from Holmer Green Senior School, High Wycombe were invited by Watford FC to meet and interview the French and Spanish speaking footballers in their native languages, allowing them to use their language skills in a new and exciting context.

At a sixth form college in Cambridge students decided to speak nothing but a language of their choice for the whole day, in all of their lessons, with friends, and members of the public. They are being sponsored so as to raise money for charity while improving their language skills.
