Introduction

These pages provide information which supports employers in identifying and addressing language and intercultural skills needs.

An increasing body of research highlights the economic case for developing these skills in business and employment, whether it be to support successful international business or to support business with a multicultural workforce and customer base at home.

Faced with a globalised economy and an increaingly globalised workforce, the UK's shortfall in foreign language and intercultural skills is a major barrier.

Many employers are developing an International Communication Plan for their organisation. There are a number of resources to support employers in their planning:

A growing number of employers are working with the (Regional) Language Networks in the nine English regions and in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to develop an exciting range of initiatives, including Business Language Champions.

The Language Skills Alliance is focussing on sector-specific initiatives and produces an e-zine and bulletin, The Business of Language UK.

CILT organises an Annual Conference addressing the language and intercultural skills issues in business and employment. It provides on-going support in the recruitment of linguists and provides language business support.

The European Award for Languages recognises creative ways to improve the quality of language teaching, motivate students and make the best of available resources. Applications are invited from schools, colleges, universities, businesses and other institutions engaged in foreign language initiatives, which are innovative, effective and replicable.
