Schools - achieving success, White Paper (Department for Education and Skills (DfES), 2001)

With relevance for the whole range of curriculum content, including languages, this government policy document initiated debate about a new and more coherent offer for learners aged 14-19. It introduced formally for the first time discussion of:

  • Balance between “mastering the basics” and learners’ preferences and aspirations
  • Availability of high quality vocational learning offering access to higher education
  • Recognition for both academic and vocational achievement, potentially through one umbrella qualification
