How do individuals really use their language skills at
work?
CILT, the National Centre for Languages recently completed a
research project mapping the functions that professional linguists
(teachers, trainers, tutors, translators and interpreters) and
intercultural professionals perform as part of their job role. The
result of this research is an occupational map for
languages and intercultural skills.
The occupational map gives an overview of the
various roles requiring languages and intercultural skills and
outlines their complexities and the overlaps between them.
It can be used by CILT, other sector skills
bodies, qualification developers, careers advisers and professional
associations
- To enable contextualisation of training,
advice and guidance for the different occupations covered by the
map.
- To promote careers with languages and
intercultural skills
- As a tool to outline progression routes and
careers using languages and intercultural skills.

The map is also being used to inform the
development of the latest National Language
Standards, due for completion in March 2010.
