CILT, the National Centre for Languages, has
been commissioned by UKCES to review the National Language
Standards, the National Occupational Standards in languages. They
were last revised in 2005.
How are the standards being reviewed?
The project is overseen by a steering
group.The first phase, from May to October 2009, involves
UK-wide awareness-raising and initial consultation, including
questionnaires for employers and training providers, teachers,
awarding bodies, professional organisations and other experts. The
first draft will be completed in October 2009.
Consultation for the second phase, from
October to January, will include focus groups across the UK in
November. The second draft will be completed by January 2010
The final draft will be completed by March
31st 2010, following further, targeted consultation.
CILT, the National Centre for Languages, is
the UK Sector Skills Body for languages, responsible for
maintaining and developing UK Occupational Standards in Languages for work, and for the specialist
language professions, interpreting and
translation. CILT has recently developed
new National Occupational Standards for Intercultural Skills.
