This lively project, which integrates language and drama, brings
German to life through pantomime and provides creative preparation
for AS level German while encouraging others to learn the
language.
The performance of Aschenputtel (‘Cinderella’) requires the
students to do more than learn their lines. They write and learn
the script, organise costumes and props, sound and lighting;
moreover, all rehearsals take place in German. In keeping with
tradition, the panto, which has been performed for over 500
learners of all ages, allows the audience to interact with the
characters on the stage.
Students from Notre Dame and neighbouring schools are more
motivated to learn German as a result of the project, which has
attracted attention from the University of East Anglia’s
international visitors. The resources are available to other
schools interested in adopting the project via the website.
