Märchen und mehr (‘Fairytales and more’) sees Trinity School
working in partnership with local primary, Rockcliffe School, where
children have been learning German through stories and fairytales.
Stories, such as The three little pigs, are introduced through song
and are developed through a range of activities, which culminates
in a
recital in front of staff, parents and visitors. Parents and staff
throughout the school have been impressed with their children’s
language skills and enthusiasm for learning.
All 100 pupils at Rockcliffe Primary School are involved in the
scheme, which introduces
traditional tales in German as part of a wider crosscurricular
project. Teaching staff also benefit from this learning opportunity
and have improved their own German skills.
The school plans to introduce more stories and build links with
even more curriculum areas. It has begun using a similar
methodology in other schools, where one French and one Spanish
story have been covered.
This project also receives the German Embassy Language
Prize.
