Behaviour and learning difficulties have not stopped students at
St John’s Secure Unit at Tiffield from enjoying language lessons
and becoming more culturally aware. The unique initiative from
local Language College, Campion School, which also involves staff
in language learning has introduced the children to French, German,
Spanish and Japanese since it began in December 2003.
Students at the Unit, many of whom have a criminal record, have
come to view the language sessions as a reward for excellent
behaviour and even a little language learning has had an impact on
the self-esteem and confidence of the young people involved. They
are exposed to languages through a range of methods, including
taster sessions, games, puzzles and contact with native speakers,
and some learners have received Campion School certificates for
French and German.
