Birmingham students get real life insight into language business

DictionariesA local language expert inspired Year 8 students at Ninestiles School in Acocks Green to pursue their language learning and open up a whole array of opportunities by giving them an insight into the language business.

Sara, who runs her own translation business, Airspeed Translations, spoke about her experience of running her own business using languages and how these skills bring social and career benefits not to mention the opportunities to travel!

The interactive workshops, which gave students the chance to question their on-hand expert, were organised as part of the BLC programme in the West Midlands, and judging by the feedback from staff, Sara’s visit was a huge success.

Hannah Waywell, Curriculum Leader for MFL at Ninestiles School, said:

Sara provided the students with essential and varied information on languages and possible career routes, of which they were previously unaware.  By having a visitor who uses languages regularly in their job, students are given a real life insight into an employer’s day to day work and the advantages of knowing a Modern Foreign Language.”

Sara was pleased with students’ questions and thanked them for their attentiveness:

“All three classes were very receptive and asked good questions. They seemed happy with the answers given and many showed an interest in languages. Hopefully more will now be convinced of their importance.” she said
