Year 9 students from John Kyrle High School in
Ross on Wye had a taste of international business recently when
they took part in a Business Language Champions event aimed at
encouraging them to keep up their language skills and thus improve
their future employability.
Vasilisa Takoeva, a Russian who works for the
Leadership Trust spoke to the students about her own experience of
living and working in the UK and Chris Everall, from Integra
Project Management Ltd and Manager of the RLN, shared her vast
experience of international trade.
Students then took part in an 'International
Apprentice' competition to complete a marketing project in French
before rounding off the session with a quiz to highlight the
differences between business cultures in different countries.
Tracey Tumelty, Languages Specialism Manager
at John Kyrle High School said:
“This event was very well received by our
students with excellent feedback and they loved the experience of
working together in a language-business context. The
activities provided by our guest speakers certainly left them with
something to think about with regard to their future language
learning.”
Vasilisa Takoeva was delighted to be involved
in the Business Language Champions programme, she said:
“I have studied languages most of my life
and realise how important they are for my own development, both in
the social and professional worlds. I have learned English,
French, Spanish and Italian and have met some wonderful people and
had opportunities I would never have imagined when I was the same
age as these Year 9 students.”
“I would be thrilled to know that this
event has encouraged any of these students to open themselves to
the world and its cultures and consider learning foreign
languages.”
