50 Year 9 students from Selston College were
set the challenge of marketing products in Germany recently as part
of a Language Challenge Masterclass.
The Masterclass, run jointly by Young Enterprise and Business
Language Champions, aimed to show students how German is used in
the business world and encourage them to continue studying the
subject at school.
Four Business Language Champions mentored students on the day,
sharing their knowledge of international trade and assisting
students with their language skills. The day culminated in
students’ presentations, which were all well received by the
business guests.
The event was supported by Thorntons Chocolates and The Cheese
Company Tuxford and Tebbutt from Melton Mowbray. Both
supplied products used by students on the day and prizes were
donated by the East Midlands Designer Centre.

“We were delighted to work with Young
Enterprise and Selston College on this event. It’s important not to
see language skills in isolation – together with enterprise skills
and business skills in sales and marketing they make a powerful
combination for any young person looking for employment. It was
also great to work with a set of students learning German. German
is unfortunately falling in popularity in schools, but I hope we’ve
shown with this event that it is as important as ever in the
business world.”
The Masterclass was a huge success and it was
used as an example of how to run a day-long workshop in the
Business Language Champions Sharing Best Practice event on
10 February.
