Coalville students face Olympics challenge

Five Business Language Champions took time out from their busy schedules to generate some interest in languages by helping local school students to tackle an Olympics challenge.

Retired director, David Sly-Jex, Chris Foster, an International Trade Advisor with UK Trade & Investment, Ian Sasse, Consultant Trainer and Coach at Agents of Change, Pearl Cole, Managing Director of Cheiron Business Research and Consulting Ltd and Sales Engineer Peter Brunt pooled their experiences of working with languages to inspire students to rise to the challenge.

The Year 7 students, from Castle Rock School and Newbridge School in Coalville, Leicestershire, were faced with putting together a plan to host an international Olympic team at their school for one month prior to the Olympics in 2012.

The plans would cover the facilities on offer, where the teams would stay and how the school should prepare to communicate with their overseas visitors. Students chose from Switzerland, Tunisia, Belgium, Romania and Colombia and had to put their language skills into practise to explain the literature and signs the school would need.

This event was run jointly by Business Language Champions in the East Midlands and The Young People’s Legacy from the 2012 Olympic Games.

Hi Cornelia, this is definitely something that can be developed within other schools and perhaps something you could discuss with your current Business Language Champion.

Wow, this sounds good. I would like this to happen in my school too. Would this be possible?
