Launching a network to look at creativity and share activity ideas

January 2008

Lead Teacher and Lead School

Jane Full, Hayle Community School, Cornwall

Main objectives of the network:

Creativity with an emphasis on moving away from the textbook to trial different approaches with targeted groups, either through specific projects or new pedagogy.

How many schools are involved in the network?

Six

Description of how the network was launched:

Following Wendy Ward’s two-day sessions in March and June '07, the Lead Teacher approached schools within the area. The first meeting was spent discussing issues and agreeing on what the most effective objective would be that tied in with the needs of all schools. (Also how we would try not to spend all of the funding to cover the cost of supply!)

The launch meeting was three hours long. Wendy Ward inspired us all with activities and ideas for how to take the next step. We set the date for a third meeting.

During the third meeting we discussed projects we have already put into practice – with some excellent ideas. We decided on which schools/ groups would work on which topic areas, such as clothes, food etc… so that we don’t all create something new on the same topic! Some great ideas and a variety of activities.

Any advice you may give to others looking to set up a network:

The Regional Trainer has been fantastic and very supportive, as has the county advisor. As long as the Lead Teacher can get everyone together the teachers’ discussions run the meetings – it’s a great opportunity to share ideas and feel inspired again.

Briefly, what are the future plans of the network?

The next meeting will be an opportunity to talk about how individual projects are developing and if there are any problems that we can talk through. It will also provide us with the opportunity to share our experiences of those projects which have already taken place in the classroom and, in particular, share the pupils’ reactions and if their attitude to the subject has become more positive.

The ‘grand finale’ will take place in March when we will take an afternoon to share/ show/ demonstrate/ try all our projects and activities with each other and our neighbouring SLN at Mounts Bay.

CILT wishes to thank Jane for writing this case study.
