Double Club: German and football
During May and June 2006, the Modern Foreign Languages department was involved in an exciting 8-week project with the Goethe Institute and Arsenal Football Club for Year 8 students of German that was planned to coincide with the 2006 World Cup. Students attended a weekly 45 minute German language lesson and a 45 minute football training session with an Arsenal coach each Tuesday after school.

The project was successfully launched on 2 May and ran until 27 June. The culmination of the project was a celebratory visit by students to Highbury Stadium on Thursday, 29 June for a Double Club German Day, where they joined other participating schools in a fun-packed day of football and language based activities.
The project generated media interest and the school was pleased to invite the BBC to visit one Tuesday evening to film the students during their German lesson and while training. The footage was shown on BBC Breakfast TV during the World Cup in June.
The students were interviewed by the BBC about why they wanted to participate in the project and their experiences to date. The students’ responses were overwhelmingly positive.

| Students interviewed by BBC correspondent |
“I really enjoy the football because we’re trained by an Arsenal Youth Coach”
“I really like the football and the German because it’s fun and I enjoy it. I thought the German was going to be boring but it turned out that we do some fun activities. I think my German has improved a bit. I really like the football activities and we have a good coach”
“I really enjoy the club because you get to learn about German footballers and places … and you get to play football which is good and we also have a coach from Arsenal, which is really good”
I go to the Double Club German because …
“… I want to play football and it’s free and I want to brush up on my German and it’s a big opportunity because we have a coach from Arsenal and I really enjoy it and it isn’t hard but I learn new words and it’s fun”
“… I want to get better at German so I can move up. I really enjoy the football because we have a good coach”
“… it’s interesting and also fun and we also get a football session with a great coach from Arsenal”
“… it gives me the opportunity to learn more German and to improve my football skills”.
Quote from Arsenal trainer:
“I believe the Double Club German is a great opportunity for the students to help improve their German in a fun way. For their hard work in the class, they are rewarded with a 45 minute football session. The students have really enjoyed the Club and it’s always pleasing to see them having fun and using their German language skills in the football sessions”
