27 pupils from Levenshulme High School have just returned from an exciting study visit to Italy

Many MFL departments are faced with the challenge of where to find the time for teaching additional languages. Levenshulme High School in Manchester has not only found the time to teach Italian but have found a fantastic way of rewarding pupils for all the extra time and effort that they are putting in.

The programme for Year 9 and 10 pupils was fully funded by the school, Manchester’s only Specialist Language College. 21 of the pupils have been attending a weekly after-school Italian class, and the reward for their commitment was a week-long stay in Florence, with language classes in the morning, and visits to Pisa, Siena and of course Florence’s shops in the afternoons. Six year 9 pupils earned their place on the trip as a reward for three years of excellent attendance and behaviour records at the school.

Nusheen Kauser, 15, said of the trip: “It was great to actually be in Italy after learning the language for a year. I really enjoyed seeing the Tower of Pisa, and of course the shopping! I study history too, and it was really interesting to find out about the cities we visited, and the works of art in the Uffizi Gallery. It was a good mixture of study and fun.”

Levenshulme High School hopes to offer the visit again next year to a different group of pupils.
