CILT Support for Language Colleges
Guidelines for regional ELL-LC conferences
We appreciate that organising an event which requires teachers and speakers to find one time and place where they can all meet can be a bit of a headache. However, we are aware of many successful events arranged by SLCs, which have come to a successful conclusion as a result of good organisation and steadfast determination, as well as a degree of flexibility. For example, an LC hosting a training day on a year 6 induction day to attract teachers.
Language Colleges' tight targets and time constraints mean that they are using to being very creative in their approach to partnerships and training and often prove themselves to be very good at sharing practice and responsibility. Their desire to improve constantly and break out of moulds generates empathy among partners and the collective desire to improve. Seminars and conferences can carefully respond to partners' training needs and joint planning at all levels, which feeds cross-phase improvement and creates smoother transition for pupils from key stage 2 to 3.
When organising your event please consider the following questions. The answers we’ve supplied are suggestions but obviously different regions have different needs.
How long should it be?
How many people should attend?
What should be on the agenda?
Where can I get hold of the Key Stage 2 Framework?
How can we ensure this isn’t a one-off event with no longer term impacts?
Who else should we inform?
Do you have a draft programme?
Where can I find more information?
Either a whole day event or, where more appropriate for primary colleagues, afternoon/ twilight event.
How many people should attend?
We encourage you to aim for a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 40 attendees, however we recognise that geographical factors can be restrictive. Therefore conference participants should be appropriate to regional circumstances. Please contact us if you would like specific advice about this.
Select a specific focus for event (eg. KS2 Framework; exploring transition from KS2 – KS3)
Depending upon partnership’s priorities, draw up suitable programme, taking account of current status of regional primary programmes. This might include use of Training the Trainers materials (from 8 training modules), for example by calling on registered trainers to deliver a session on KS2 FW, and opportunities to look at the new Training Zone.
Include a slot to focus on assessment issues (Junior Portfolio, Languages Ladder, National Curriculum, Common European Framework etc.)
Consider participation of a speaker for keynote and regional primary languages protagonist, but balance the agenda with input from participating primary schools.
Where can I get hold of the Key Stage 2 Framework?
You can order it from the DfES (DfES1721-2005-EN) or download it online. Guidance for implementing the Framework is also available online.
How can we ensure this isn’t a one-off event with no longer term impacts?
Running concurrently with the event, organise an exhibition of good practice, books/ authentic resources, work samples, completed language portfolios, schemes of work, photos, artefacts.
Ensure that your existing and newly-found partners establish an email network to facilitate next steps, future planning and shared practice.
Consider inviting attendees to give their feedback or fill in an evaluation form, to help plan a future meeting.
Please let CILT know about your event, even during the planning stage, as we may be able to involve a Language Teaching Advisor, where appropriate, and we can help publicise your event. Please contact Natalie Steiner by email Natalie.Steiner@cilt.org.uk or by phone 020 7379 5101 ext. 289.
Consult with your Comenius Manager to check if suggested dates for the event might clash with other regional events. Perhaps invite the Comenius Manager to come along or take part in the event. Ask whether they can help with the publicity for your event.
Consult with your Nacell Regional Support Group for similar reasons as noted above.
Do you have a draft programme?
An example draft programme (doc, 27KB) can be downloaded with notes on possible speakers.
Where can I find more information?
Please consult the SLC event web pages for templates and sample letters of invitation, booking forms, agendas and programmes from previous SLC events.
Support for Lead Teachers of networks in the KS3 Programme led by CILT and SNS, includes advice about running network meetings, which you may find useful.
If you have any other questions please contact the CILT SLC programme co-ordinator, Natalie Steiner by email Natalie.Steiner@cilt.org.uk or by phone 020 7379 5101 ext. 289.
