Work Experience with Languages

There are many different ways of gaining work experience using your languages, improving and acquiring skills. The most common methods are:

  • Taking a gap year
  • Year abroad while at university
  • Working abroad
  • Student placements

Gap Year

If you are interested in taking a 'gap' year before going to university to improve your language level then you may wish to consider organising a placement through GAP activity projects themselves.

A GAP placement is always a challenge. You could be working in an environment alien to anything you've ever experienced, so you'll need to adapt to your responsibilities with maturity. Some placements, such as AIDS clinics or leprosy centres, need you to see things from the other person's point of view. GAP Volunteers contribute to ongoing work, in parts of the world that need our support. As well as making a real difference in the lives of others, you'll certainly learn a lot about yourself.
