Lord Dearing has completed the review of languages policy, to encourage more teenagers to get a languages qualification and presented his final report to government.

Education Secretary, Alan Johnson, has agreed the recommendations set out in the report, published on 12 March. These include compulsory language learning for 7-14 year olds, an annual budget of over £50m a year to support teaching in primary and secondary schools, and the creation of more opportunities for overseas visits and work experience.

CILT warmly welcomes the thorough-going programme of measures announced by the DfES in its response to Lord Dearing’s report, and in particular the strongly-worded support from the Education Secretary for a renaissance in language learning.
