120 take Brighton beach Spanish lessons

On the hottest weekend of the year so far, in the heart of the Brighton Festival, locals and visitors alike were offered the chance to take a free Spanish lesson on the beach next to the historic Brighton West Pier.

Fifteen minute taster lessons for 120 beginners were organised by Cactus Language, a language travel agency, with students sitting in deckchairs while teacher Nerea from San Sebastian introduced them to greetings, numbers, singular and plural and the inevitable ‘dos cervezas, por favor’. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons the Cactus Man - in fact, Cactus Language’s Operations Manager - donned the full-size cactus suit to attract nervous Brits worried about making fools of themselves for 15 minutes in their first language lessons since they left school.

Once seated, the students from Britain and other European countries relaxed and cheerfully pronounced the new expressions and left with a new enthusiasm for language learning and a desire to start evening courses or full-time courses in Spain or Latin America. Rich Ambler, Managing Director of Cactus Language, summed up the weekend with ‘after nearly 5 years of sending students to Spain, it still amazes me how nervous people are before they start and how relieved they are after their first lesson - it’s almost like before and after riding the rollercoaster on the pier’.

The Brighton Beach Spanish Lessons took place as part of the 2001 European Year of Languages and will be repeated throughout the summer.
